Library Policies
Returns

Library Board policy as of February 13, 2002. Revised December 12, 2007; October 9, 2024.

Policies > Returns

Unless otherwise noted, books and other items may be returned in the outside book drop, inside the Library, or at most public libraries in Connecticut.

Fragile Items

Fragile items, including mobile hotspots, electronic devices, board games, and items from the Library of Things, must be returned in person directly to the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library.
They must not be returned in the book drop or to other libraries.

Items with special return instructions or restrictions will be clearly marked.

If an item is damaged because it was returned incorrectly, the borrowing patron is responsible for the cost of repair or replacement.

Connecticut Public Libraries

As a participant in the statewide DeliverIT CT program and the LCI delivery system, the Library accepts the return of items that belong to most other Connecticut public libraries and will forward said materials to the owning library.

Unless otherwise noted, items belonging to the Library may be returned to other participating Connecticut libraries.

The Library accepts no responsibility for any fines or fees accrued during transit.

Return Restrictions

Borrowing patrons are responsible for obeying any return restrictions placed on items owned by other libraries, and are liable for any damages, fines, or fees issued by the owning library.

The Library will not accept items with labels that clearly indicate they must be returned directly to the owning library. If items are returned to the Library in error, they will not be checked in and the owning library will be contacted for further instruction.

Schools and Out-of-State Libraries

Materials Belonging to Berlin-Peck Memorial Library

Items belonging to the Library should be returned to the Library or to another Connecticut public library. The Library cannot guarantee that a school or out-of-state library will be able to return items to the Library, and in most cases they cannot. Patrons are responsible for any return costs for books that were returned incorrectly. Items that are returned incorrectly and do not make it back to the Library will be considered lost, and the borrowing patron will be billed.

Materials Belonging to Schools or Out-of-State Libraries

The Library does not accept the return of items from school or out-of-state libraries.

If such items are handed in, the Library will contact the owning library one (1) time and attempt to arrange for their return. The Library takes no responsibility for return costs, late fines, bills for replacement, or any other fines or fees issued by the owning library.
